  • The Second Census of Queensland – Official report on Findings – Original 1864

The Second Census of Queensland – Official report on Findings – Original 1864

Printed in Brisbane in 1864, Registrar General Darvall produced the Second Census of Queensland.

The population of the State (excluding aborigines) had doubled in three years to 61,467. Brisbane had likewise doubled in population whilst Rockhampton was four times more populous. 60% were male although in urban areas the discrepancy was less than 4% leaving the rural position fairly dire for a young man at near two to one.

A high proportion could not read or write and it was noted that an improvement since the first census was due to the impact of educated migrants.

Temporary housing was a feature although the report takes a positive read on the proportion of the population actively involved in wealth generation – a lesson perhaps for current bureaucrats.
