  • True at First Light – Ernest Hemingway (Introduced by Patrick Hemingway) – First Edition

True at First Light – Ernest Hemingway (Introduced by Patrick Hemingway) – First Edition

Regarded by the London Times as “the most important book to appear in 1999″

A posthumously published work. Released in 1999 to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of Hemingway’s birth.

Relates to the 1953-54 safari to East Africa with his fourth wife. Part fiction part fact. Much controversy regarding its release. One school believing that Patrick’s indulgence in editing this unfinished work partly commercially driven. Hemingway lovers on the other hand happy to get some more words from the great man.

Published by Heinemann, 319 pages. A fine copy in near new condition.

Hemingway in Africa with some reality and some fantasy.

  • The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway – Cape Edition

The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway – Cape Edition

Published by Jonathan Cape a 1970 edition. Octavo, 127 pages with the magical wrap around dust jacket by Hans Tindal. Some light spotting to page edges, ownership name on free endpaper, otherwise very bright internally … better than good copy in a very good unclipped dust jacket.

The Nobel citation reads – “his powerful style-forming mastery of the art of modern narration, as most lately revealed in his novel The Old Man and the Sea”.

Just has to be a reflection of Hemingway’s life a struggle to reach beyond his boundaries …

Should be everyone’s favourite short read.

Islands in the Stream – Ernest Hemingway – First Edition 1970

This is the first UK edition published by Collins, London in 1970.

Large octavo, 398 pages with end paper maps. Very good if not better condition.

A major novel left among Hemingway’s writings at the time of death. Mary Hemingway said “The book is all Ernest’s. We have added nothing to it” … we believe her …

Hemingway’s Last Novel and a good one!

The First 49 Stories – Ernest Hemingway

Published by Jonathan Cape a 1968 edition. Octavo, 414 pages a little fading of the lemon cover near and at the spine. Internally very clean … still a good to very good copy. Protected in Brodart.

The best introduction to Hemingway. Many favourites including “the short happy life of Francis Macomber”.

  • Appointment in Samarra – John O’Harra

Appointment in Samarra – John O’Harra

John O’Harra’s first novel and a little naughty in parts … and sad at the end.

Lovely condition … just look at the crisp bright dust jacket over sixty years old!

Praised by Hemingway although O’Harra did not feel his influence. Great introduction reflecting on his life during his writing (interesting) and the real influences and how the title came about … Not a self analysis … seemingly
