Original hand coloured stipple engraving. Good strong clean example with excellent bright original colouring. The stipple effect is striking. 32cm by 24 cm, strong laid paper, very good condition with a few innocent marks.

Engraved by J Milbert Lambert after a drawing by Nicholas-Martin Petit, official artist on the Baudin expedition. Published at Paris by Bertrand as part of the most beautifully illustrated of the great voyages – Voyages of Discoveries in Terra Australia.

The Forces of Nature – A Popular Introduction to the Study of Physical Phenomena – Amedee Guillemin – Translated by Mrs Norman Lockyer – Edited and with Additions from J Norman Lockyer – 1873

Despite being a “Popular” edition, this substantial book is very scarce indeed, possibly because it would have been very expensive in the day. No expense was spared in producing the illustrations.

This copy housed in a rather flash full leather binding, albeit showing some sign of wear with leather scuffs etc. The binding reflects the provenance which was as a prize at the Hereford Cathedral College in England. At the front is the most elegant manuscript prize inscription in Latin, of course.

Large royal octavo, 679 pages, with over 150 illustrations, some in colour from chromolithographs.

A most enterprising book on physics which not only still holds some educational interest today but for anyone interested in the history of the development of the physical sciences then its hard to pass by. Starts with Gravity, Weight, and Universal Attraction … Falling Bodies … the Laws … Newton etc. then Hydrostatics, weights in liquids … Archimedes, Boyle etc Barometers, Pumps Mariotte’s Law. Sound, reflection, velocity, refraction, vibrations, strings, waves etc. Sources of light, photometry, reflection, refraction, colours, spectrum. Radiation, phosphorescence, nature of light, polarization. Heat, calorimetry, a species of motion. Magnets, electrical attraction and repulsion, electrical machines. Leyden Jars, induction, electrical lighting (remember 1873) and finally Atmospheric Meteors.

We have already indicated that there is so much to like about this book. At Voyager we have always had a fascination regarding electro induction devices such as the Wimshurst machine. Here we have several woodcuts of some of the more superior “electrical machines” of the day … just superb.

A super gift for anyone interested in early fundamental physics and or the history of the science.

Map of the Eastern Hemisphere – Allain Manesson Mallet – 1683

An unusual original copper engraved map of the Eastern Hemisphere or “Ancien Continent” by Mallet published in Paris in 1863.

This is an early depiction of the West Coast of Australia and the Southern extremity of Tasmania following the exploratory efforts of the Dutch.

A worn track of the printed area and deficiency way bottom left otherwise a good strong example

A massive hypothetical “Terra Incognues” appears in the south in order to “balance” the world.

Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV became a Sergeant Major and an Inspector of Fortifications. His maps have a beautiful decorative and unique style.

Lure of the Southern Seas – The Voyages of Dumont D’Urville 1826-1840

Large perfect bound soft cover (30cm x 24cm) a good size for showing off the many illustrations from artwork created at the time and photographs of displays from the voyage collection held in France.

Published by the Historic Housed Trust of NSW in association of a exhibition held at the Sydney Museum in 2003.

Well researched and produced making an important contribution to works on the two voyages undertaken by Dumont D’Urvillle in the first half of the 19th Century.

Following and introductory chapter “Southern Discomfort” and excellent map, we gain an understanding of the man and what drove him. His voyage towards the Polar Ice; the Anthropology and “Harvest of Curiosities” and the more defined Natural History Catalogue. Some notes on the artists without whom the wonder could not have been so well revealed. Data back up in the form of routes and statistics of the Voyage are followed by the great man’s correspondence and of all things “his will” … references, bibliography.

Dumont D’Urville well presented historical account, some new information and special images.

A Record of Tasmanian Nomenclature with Dates and Origins – J Moore-Robinson

Extremely scarce item> we have not seen any original copies available .. and this one in fine condition.

A pretty early place-name book … that is mainly European place-names. At a time when the consideration of original aboriginal names for places is foremost in mind this is a worthwhile counterpoint. We are not sure which work has most places covered … a confluence of both would be worthwhile … we don’t mean reading the obvious .. more the less obvious.

Published at the Mercury Press in 1911.

Francois Peron’s Natural History of Maria Island Tasmania. – Brian Plomley et al

Another Plomley rarity we don’t expect to see again for a long time.

Published as part of the Records of the Queen Victoria Museum in 1990.

Soft cover, 50 pages, with charts etc all in fine condition.

Baudin spent three days circumnavigation Maria Island in February 1802. Francois Peron was zoologist but also made meteorological, geomorphic, botanical observation – a multi faceted scientist was Peron.

Peron knew his stuff when it came to Maria.
