    A rare item, complete 20 page extract from the Journal of the Geographical Society of Australasia 1886 with the scarce folding map of the Fly and Strickland river systems. Very good condition, sugar paper wrappers.

    Henry Charles Everill was the appointed leader of a scientific, collecting and anthropological expedition to New Guinea in 1885. The expedition used the 77 tone steamboat “Bonito” an took with them a whaleboat which they would use beyond the Bonito’s capability.

    The report is a detailed account of goings on and observations during the expedition. Initially they were to explore east of the Fly river but Everill changed the plans because of difficulties encountered traversing the Gulf. They discovered, named and explored the Strickland river which was missed by D’Albertis who had seen an opening but failed to explore further. Whilst the expedition was over in three months they collected a monumental amount of specimens particularly botanical, which would have been down to the skill and energy of botanist Bauerlin.

    Before the returned fake news had been spread that they had been ambushed and massacred by natives. Reprisal boats had already been sent before their actual return. In fact they had encountered hostile activity and were rather lucky in their endeavours.

    Everill was highly praised in Australia for his exploration effort and management. He went on to be a tobacco planter in Sumatra and died in England in 1900.

    Buckley was a media celebrity being a multi published author, editor of the National Review and host of Firing Line.

    His west east crossing of the Atlantic was a dream of many years. A charming, detailed account from Miami, to Bermuda across to the Azores an on to Marbella. An honest account of emotions and behaviour along the way.

    A large quantity of figures were found in houses and could be dated by coins found along with them. Consequently, serving as a scale by which to date late examples of classical work.     A very good modern book published in 1999 by Robinson. London.

    Small folio, 194 illustrated throughout with new charts (nicely done) and fresh photographs taken by the authors talented wife. The narrative by Graham Collier, ex RFAT WWII and later a Professor at the university of Georgia.

    Collier made several trips south and this book was the result … not only the Antarctic Continent wand the recounting pf Shackleton, Scott, Amundsen et al and, also onto South Georgia, Peter and Elephant Islands.

    A nice book with relevant and well delivered and illustrated content.

    A delightful Australian School watercolour … a Woman Bathing by a Lake 32cm by 21cm. External frame dimensions. 50cm by 39cm. Lovely palette and a charming naivety.

    Matted and framed by upmarket London Picture Framers, Restorers and Guilder with their label on the back. Slight hints of age but still in very good condition.

    The artist date and location nicely noted lower left and right on the mat. Decorative lines drawn to mat with lovely choice of fill colouring.

    After reasonable research we have not come up with anything on the artist nor any obvious record in the Royal Navy.

    Nice Australian watercolour from the 1870’s – Artist named but little known about him.

    Henry Hussey (1825-1902) was an Evangelist, Printer, Historian who recorded his life an travels and published the work in 1897. It is full of colonial detail on many subjects.

    The Adelaide’s Library Board selected the work for their magnificent facsimile series, published by them as no 203 in 1978.

    Octavo, 504 pages, bound in tan in their normal style. A fine copy.

    Interesting that the original was published by Hussey & Gillingham, Adelaide … the authors jointly owned business.

    Hussey emigrates to South Australia and recounts his early days; visits Launceston and Sydney. Has various occupations and commercial failures and “disasters”. Commenced business as a printer, distracted by gold discovery in Victoria; recommences business …saves the “Observer”. Travel to America via Tahiti and Panama with “incidents” … a tour Baptised at Bethany … to England and back home to Adelaide. A History of Sa … Secretary to Angus … etc

    A fine copy of a book about a fine man in fine times in Australia.
