A visual delight Robert Bacon’s book on some of the rarest and most beautiful maps ever created, starting with the Hereford Mappa Mundi.

Folio size, softcover, perfect bound, published by Bracken Books, London in 1989. Jonathan Potter had a hand in it … well he would.

Forty alternating plates and page narrative after a fine introduction by the compiler.

Including the aforesaid map … Ptolemy Map of the World; Rotz – the Portlan Chart of South-East Asia; Saxton – Dorecestriae; Ortleious – the beautiful Pacific Map; Boazio – Isle of Wight … and the rest … they are all really super.

The Printed Maps of America Parts I, II and III – Map Collectors’ Circle … R.V. Tooley

The Map Collectors’ Circle publication published progressively … No 68 being Part I comprising 197 catalogued items over 24 pages with 24 pages of illustrations of selected maps; No 69 being Part II comprising further catalogued items up to 350 inclusive on 13 pages and a further 18 pages of map illustrations; No 80 being Part III increasing the catalogue to 573 items, including atlases.

Published from Chiswell Street, London for I and II and Baker Street for Part III as they had moved in the meantime.

All compiled by the great R.V. Tooley, in fine condition and carrying the personal stamp of published Australian cartographic expert T.M. Perry.

A sound set completing the general issue on America with good provenance.

The very first group from Vol 1 No 1 to Vol1 No 6 published in 1996 published bimonthly by Astor Publishing by Edward Astor at Astor Publishing. Very good condition.

With an Editorial and Advisory Board to die for including, Robert Clancy, David Woodward and Peter Van Der Kroot.

Each edition approximately 100 pages, heavily illustrated mostly in colour. Content extremely well researched and presented.

By example, the first edition includes … Mythical Seas; Carto controversy; the mapmaker as artist; the Line that Divided the World; the Captain Cook Legacy; the Brilliant Irascible Ferdinand Hassler … and in the second … Cartographic Thievery; Carto philately (love it); Charting Shipwrecks Down Under [New South wales]; the Island of California. Two by Two – Twenty- two Pairs of Maps from the Newberry Library Illustrating 500 Years of Western Cartographic History.

Published in 1993 as an interpretive guide to a major exhibition at the Newberry, which hold one of the world’s great cartographic collection.

Glossy softcover, 48 pages, with very good illustrations, one map per page. An unusual presentation of extremely rare sometimes unique maps an charts.

Systemes Geographiques de Ptoloemee, de Strabon et d’Eratosthene – Malte Brun c1826

Original engraved map from Malte Brun’s Atlas of the Ancient Greek geographers Ptolemy, Strabo and Eratosthenes. The then known World.

32cm by 24cm partially coloured in outline. A good example on strong wove paper, the odd mark around the bottom border, generally clean and bright.

Conrad Malte Brun (1755-1826) a major Danish born cartographer who worked out of France during his professional life. This example was drawn by Bovinel Giraldon and engrave by Jean Baptiste Marie Chamouin, individuals who worked for Malte Brun early in the 19th Century. After his death his son went on publishing the maps for a number of years making the precise year in which the map was made difficult to determine.

The Ptolemy map takes pride of place, being regarded as more accurate and informative. We particularly like the naming of Sri Lanka as Taprobana a matter that has been disputed in some cartographic quarters.

The island of Thule appears on the Eratosthenes map … an unsolved mystery. Some think it was Ireland or the Shetlands or an island off Norway. Unfortunately the Nazi’s spoilt the mystery somewhat by claiming it was the birthplace of their superior race.

How to Identify Old Maps and Globes – Raymond Lister

To a collector this title might seem a bit glib … but the book is much more than that an in particular is a special refence for watermarks and cartographers.

Small quarto, 265 pages first edition published by Bell, London in 1965. 59 plates. Still extremely relevant. Very good condition.

Starts with an “Outline of the History of Maps and Charts”; Celestial Maps; Methods of Maps Production; Decoration and Conventional Signs; Terrestrial and Celestial Globes and Armillary Spheres. And then a lengthy appendix (22 pages) on The Use of Watermarks in dating Old Maps and Documents – nicely illustrated; a Bibliography (8 pages); List of Cartographers etc 1500 to 1850 (34 pages) and Index to whole.

Identification – takes you further than expected.
