Voyager Arrives in Hobart Town

Ahoy! It’s been grand sailing since we left the Brisbane Arcade rounding the Horn in high seas we lost our yards to the wind, and water entered the bread room. So the crew were mighty hungry and happy to see Hobart Town. Past Bruny Island into Storm Bay (Aye she was a wee bit rough) past South Arm and with the wind behind us had a clean run into the docks. The sails are drying to be stored whilst the crew clear the stock of rare books, maps and prints ashore to the new Voyager in historic Salamanca Place. Convict labour built our new home from local hewn sandstone. The beams are bare and bear their marks. The smell of history fills the air. Aye she’s right for us!

Based on a lifetime of collecting, we have fine and rare first hand accounts on many subjects including exploration and travel; the great circumnavigations, darkest Africa, remote Peru, freezing Polar Regions, mysterious Asia and the unforgiving Australian Outback. We have a special interest in Tasmania, Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Also early science, naval and military items (including original manuscripts), natural history, fine bindings, the esoteric and beautiful illustrated works.

In fiction we have the likes of Hemingway, Greene and Steinbeck. First editions from the 1930s are a Voyager favourite, with eye catching dust jackets they make a special gift. We keep collectable bookends from the 1920s, scientific instruments, microscopes and spectroscopes - often by leading Victorian makers - as well as telescopes, sextants and other marine items. Our gallery of maps and prints are all original, with Australian birds by John Gould, 17th Century Maps by Petrus Bertius and striking 1920s fashion prints from Paris. Come and visit our new home when in Hobart and enjoy our website – and you can drop us a line, we would be thrilled to hear what you have been up to and what takes your fancy …
