The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway – Cape Edition

Published by Jonathan Cape a 1970 edition. Octavo, 127 pages with the magical wrap around dust jacket by Hans Tindal. Some light spotting to page edges, ownership name on free endpaper, otherwise very bright internally … better than good copy in a very good unclipped dust jacket.

The Nobel citation reads – “his powerful style-forming mastery of the art of modern narration, as most lately revealed in his novel The Old Man and the Sea”.

Just has to be a reflection of Hemingway’s life a struggle to reach beyond his boundaries …

Should be everyone’s favourite short read.

Summer of Smoke – Tennessee Williams – 1957

Published by Secker & Warburg as a softcover in 1957 originally completed by Tennessee Williams in 1948. Perfect bound 8-0 pages with wrap-around green paper cover to the blue soft cover binding. Excellent condition bar ownership stamp and personal library reference on half title.

A play in two parts with thirteen scenes. The play was successful after a re-write [published here] in 1952… it again took another form and was re-titled “the Eccentricities of a Nightingale” in 1964.

The entire play is set in Glorious Hill, Mississippi and is set in the early part of the 20th Century. The story centres on the potential romance between Alma Winemiller a highly strung minister’s daughter and John Buchanan a rather wild and undisciplined young doctor.

The “Author’s Production Notes” covering two pages are succinct but very helpful … focussing on the scenes, mood etc they provide a super introduction for those who enjoy the reading of a play of some standard.

Raymond Howgego was teacher of physics before he gave that up to become a full-time traveler and travel writer. Possibly put down more words than any other living person. Seemingly can handle almost all European languages and Arabic and probably a few others. He still has an interest in amateur radio and fixing electronic items … we withhold his call sign, but you can find it if you try.

500 Days – Around the World On a Twelve Foot Yacht – Serge Testa – Signed First Privately Published

A pretty rare softcover privately published by the adventurer in Aspley a suburb of Brisbane in 1988.

216 pages, illustrated from original photographs and sketches (including maps) by the author. A little turned at the corners and the very odd mark, otherwise very good condition.

Whilst some records show the smallest boat to circumnavigate was Kuczynski in May 2018 in a 21 foot vessel … we cannot understand that claim as the Serge Testa’s “Acrohc” was 40% smaller at 12 feet.

Surely cannot really be beaten – 12 foot around the World.
