Antarctica – Evangelos Papathanassiou – Scarce Vinyl Pressing 1983

Fine copy of the soundtrack by “Vangelis” to Koreyoshi Kurahara’s 1983 film about the 1958 ill-fated Japanese scientific expedition to the South Pole, and the dramatic rescue from impossible weather conditions on their return journey. It’s as much about the survival of some of the dogs initially left behind as the people. Vangelis was invited to produce his dramatic electronic music score after the worldwide success of Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner.

The film was not that successful overseas, whilst being the Japanese sponsored entry it was not accepted in the foreign language section of the Academy Awards. Back home in Japan the beautiful huskies managed to get the film a Popularity Award.

Vangelis on the other hand shows his usual innovation and brilliance. Rare Japanese pressing. Perfect Condition.

Tasmanian Vision – The art of nineteenth century Tasmania

Published by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in 1988. Oblong Landscape soft wrapper production of 115 pages with over 200 hundred illustrations, the more important works in scale and colour. A little ageing to the covers but really a very good copy for a softcover.

From page 94 onwards are excellent biographies of the artists selected including … Mary Allport, Ludwig Becker, Thomas Bock, Boyes, Louis Breton, Brownrigg, Knut Bull, Chapman, Costantini, Robert Dowling, William Duke, Frank Dunnett, Benjamin Duterrau, Augustus Earle, G.F. Evans, Sarah Fogg. Haughton Forrest, George Frankland ….. through to John Webber. An impressive list and nicely described with sufficient worthwhile commentary. Further back we have a useful bibliography for a lifetime of further reading on this important topic.

A possible bonus is two postcard included (if you remember what they are for!) … Thomas Buck’s beautiful portraits of Woureddy a Native of Bruny Island and Mathinna.

The Search for the “Kobenhaven” and other true sea stories of the Depression Years – Minto and Stevens

Published by Graeme Andrews Productions, Epping in 1984. Number 530 of a 1,000 print run. Soft cover, octavo 52 pages, well illustrated. Cover showing some wear from use but really a very good copy. From the maritime library of Michael Connell and carries his bookplate.

The authors Thomas Minto and Eric Stevens. The main story is the search for the Kobenhaven, a magnificent five-masted Danish trading vessel which went missing on a voyage from the River Plate to Melbourne in 1928. The steam powered Junee was sent to find her, Minto was third mate. Alas the Kobenhaven was never found what we have here is a reminiscence of the attempts of the Junee in very difficulty conditions.

The rescue of the Milluna was successful and the last voyage of the Parma is nicely told by Eric Steven who crewed that voyage.

Superb photographic images throughout.

Horace – Horatii Fiacci Opera – Munro and King – Bickers Binding – 1869

A delightful copy of “Horace” illustrated by with well over 100 classical cameos or “gems” and bound in superb style by Bickers and Sons of London with their discrete stamp at the front.

Published by Bell and Dalby, London in 1869. Large octavo, with 456 pages after preliminaries, the back section of the book being a lengthy and scholarly description of the said “gems”.

The Latin text revised by Munro and the “gems” selected and detailed by King both Fellows of Trinity College Cambridge.

Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65BC – 8 BC) known as “Horace” was a leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. This is a well-produced and scholarly edition and we learn in the preface that the “gems” are authentic, whilst earlier attempts to illustrate Horace have succumbed to using inappropriate “modernised” versions etc.

The Bickers binding is full red morocco, spine panelled with raised bands, gilt lines to spine and boards, marbled endpapers with gilt rolled borders internally and to board edges, all page edges richly gilt. All a trifle rubbed … a solid a special binding. The shading on the right hand (front) board is our scanner not the board!

Nice inscription on endpaper … a gift to the Rev Mayo M.A. by his “Horace” class at Fauconberg School in Beecles … the distinguished grammar school was formed by Dr Fauconberg in 1712
