The Story of Central Hobart – Street by Street – Donald Howatson

Produced by the author in 2015. A must have for anyone interested in the history of the City area of Hobart. Perhaps the most interesting of a series of booklets published over time by Howatson. Not rare and quite often reprinted or copied may be the correct expression.

Comb bound, 62 pages, nicely illustrated and a first “printing” for sure … some we see the images (which are many and important) deteriorate as further copies are made by the xerox method.

Red protected covers with various ornament front and back.

Our favourite is the history behind the Cat and Fiddle Arcade … super stuff. A very good as new copy.

Viking Galley Bookends

A sturdy set that will hold up the heaviest of books.

Cast in copper bronze and machine finished to the back which suggests a fairly modern manufacture. Based on a design from circa 1910.

Very strong relief of galley with full sail against mountainous shoreline.

15 cm tall, weighing 2.2kgs the pair. Very good condition. A postage supplement likely dependent on the location of the buyer.

The Malay Archipelago -The Land of the Orang-Utan and the Bird of Paradise, with Studies of Man and Nature – Alfred Russel Wallace

Wallace’s great book dedicated to Charles Darwin. Beautifully written. An early fourth edition published by Macmillan in 1872. Nevertheless scarce and sought after.

Octavo, 653 pages. Re-cased at some time with the spine and front laid down; with the desired Orang-utan gilt device retained on front and similarly bird of paradise retained on front. Some marks near front but generally in good condition. Priced to condition for a scarce desirable item.

Wallace collected over 125,000 specimens identifying thousands of new species during this expedition. This book represents the backbone of his discoveries (The Wallace line) that supports the “Origin of Species”. Well illustrated with maps and engravings

The Awakening of the Soul – Ibn Tufail – from the translation of Paul Bronnle -1907

A scarce translation of Hayy ibn Yaqzan a 12th Century work by Moorish philosopher Ibn Tufail. The first philosophical novel ever written.

Small octavo, 87 pages, missing blank free end paper, clean inside, good green cloth covered boards with title and design to front, titles similarly on spine. Very scarce.

Published by the Orient Press, London as part of the Wisdom of the East Series. We believe this publisher was part of the John Murray enterprise.

The work not only had an influence or later Arabic work but also, over time, a significant influence in Europe, especially during the period of European Enlightenment.

An allegorical novel which recounts the story of a feral child who is brought up by a gazelle alone in the desert. Without any human contact the child discovers ultimate truth through a process of reasoned enquiry. The child, Hayy, meets a castaway Absal through whom he understands the human desires for material goods … Hayy concludes that such things are distractions and should be abandoned to maintain ultimate truth.

As an aside the author had a varied career including physician to the Almohad King and was a supporter of dissection and autopsy .. expressed in the novel.

Small but powerful first philosophical novel – scarce in this form.

Large octavo, original blue cloth, 88 pages of narrative followed by 49 plates of example maps referenced in the narrative. A very good copy.

The definitive book and a limited edition of only 370 copies making it pretty scarce when you think about how many map collectors there are out there.

Divided into … the Dutch Period; the French Influence; Printed maps of Tasmania and its Parts; Inset maps of Tasmania …in total 530 defined items.

The Women of the 1790 Neptune [Convict Ship] – Anne Needham et al – 1992

Self published by the principal author in 1992. The work follows a further four years research by Anne Needham after she first published on the subject.

Perfect bound large format, card cover, 187 pages illustrated nicely throughout. Scarce and sought after – a very good copy

The seventy-six convict woman are listed on the front cover and the list of free female passengers are listed on the title.

The convict women came from all parts of England. At the end of a good Introduction we see a map with the locations and names. The extraordinary history behind many, if not all, is set out incredibly well in the first 120 pages. Then the voyage out then the goings on at Norfolk Island and New South Wales.
