This is the Uniform edition published by Hodder and Stoughton. London in 1947. First published in 1932. Thick octavo 371 pages with complete dust jacket. Some ageing on a couple of pages from a relevant inserted newspaper article … we have left it there as it adds to the interest. End paper maps, 36 photographic images and two maps in the text. A pretty good copy of an excellent account. Foreword by the formidable Francis Younghusband

In 1931 Frank Smythe and his team were the first to climb Kamet in the Himalayas in Northern India. It was the first of 70 plus peaks over 25,000 feet to be climbed. At this time the Tibetan authorities would not allow access to Everest. A brilliant mountaineer, Smythe gained a reputation as a special writer and packed his books with excellent photography. He died when only 49 after suffering food poisoning and malaria whilst in Delhi.

Kamet conquered at last … and not a bad place to smoke your pipe!

A complete copy of the Journal in original blue wrappers.

Lead articles include the British Arctic Air Expedition under Hubert Watkins (author of some interesting works on Northern Queensland); The expedition in the Tien-Shan by Schomberg and further evidence of John Franklin’s retreat by William Gibson. Good photographic images as often and two nice maps of the of Greenland up to the 68th parallel and localised map of the Base Fjord. Nice condition all round.

The Monitory Lizard – Shaw and Nodder – 1790

The Monitory or Black Lizard first described with this image by Shaw. The name “Monitor” came from a belief that in the vicinity of a Crocodile this lizard would produce a high shrill cry which would provide a warning that Crocodiles are about. Seemingly, not to be relied upon.

Copper engraved and hand coloured by Shaw & Nodder and published in London in 1790 (dated in the plate). Shaw was in charge of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. Frederick Nodder was a natural history artist and worked for Banks on his Florilegium.

Une Chinoise – Pierre Brissaud Gazette du Bon Ton -1913

A beautiful hand coloured “Pochoir” by Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) for the Paris Gazette du Bon Ton published in 1913. One of the most sought after Bon Ton’s fro its extravagance.

A costume by the designer Doeuillet. A Chinese red and black coat lined with silk and with satin “over a basket” on a silk skirt embroidered with a garland. The dress underneath is crepe de Chine.

Prices are as unframed.

Scented Isles and Coral Gardens – Torres Straits, German New Guinea, and the Dutch East Indies – C.D. Mackellar – 1912

Published by John Murray, London in 1912. The greatest travel and adventure publisher of all time.

A very interesting a quite early book on the authors travels. Whilst published in 1912 it contains accounts, primarily from his detailed letter from 1885 onwards. Some of the illustrations are from his watercolours for which he apologises regarding quality. He need not as they are really quite good. There is some mild foxing which is usual for this book as it is printed on that spongy paper of the period.

Nice images and content on the Torres Straits islanders, of Kerapuna in New Guinea and the birds of paradise, the Solomon Islands and New Britain under German rule.

The last 70 pages of 190 are devoted to Java and Sumatra similarly written as if in the moment and with numerous relevant images.

A valuable New Guinea and broader book from the pre WWI era.
