Funnel Medusa – Shaw and Nodder – c1800

An original copper engraved hand coloured image of the unusual Funnel Medusa (Medusa Infundibulum). Published by Shaw and Nodder in London on around 1800.

From the Ocean around Jamaica and described by Dr Patrick Browne in his book on Jamaica “it is impossible to express the liveliness of the motions of these delicate organs, or the beautiful variety of colours that rise from them while they play to and fro in the rays of the sun”

George Shaw was in charge of Natural History at the British Museum. Nodder was a natural history artist and worked for Banks on his Florilegium.

Framed in Voyager Natural History style in black cored cream mat and gilt (with a slight red hue) frame. Perfect for the study or the beach pad if you are that lucky!

The King Fish or Opah – Shaw and Nodder -1793

An original copper engraved and hand coloured image of the strikingly beautiful King-Fish also known as the Opah and Imperial Zeus. It was published by Shaw and Nodder in May 1793.

It was decribed as by far the largest and most splendid in colour of the genus … indeed the most splendid of European fish … so singularly vivid as to surpass all the attempts of art to give an adequate idea of its beauty … (high praise indeed)

New South Wales Harrier – c1826 (Circus Assimulis) Sir William Jardine

An original hand-coloured engraving of the New Holland White Goshawk published in Edinburgh c1826 by Scotland’s greatest naturalist Sir William Jardine (1800-1874). This image is one of the earliest fine engravings of an Australian bird of prey. It was published as part of Jardine’s first great work “Illustrations in Ornithology” a now scarce and valuable collection of bird engravings.

Jardine was the 7th Baronet of Applegirth, Dumfriesshire and founder of the Ray Society. He was a superb artist in his own right but utilised the great illustrators of the day to complete his works including, Edward Lear, Selby, Stewart, Thompson and William Holmes-Lizars

An original and rather unusual hand coloured copper engraving of the Polynemus Paradiseus. Described by Shaw as a having several loose filaments (or radii) on each side of the throat. A fish that inhabits “American Seas” and is sometimes referred to as the Mango Fish

Nasal Notocanthus – Shaw and Nodder – 1802

An original and rather striking hand coloured copper engraving of the Notocanthus Nasus or Nasal Notocanthus. Described by Shaw as a having short prickles along the back and a nose-like snout. The genera Acanthonotus instituted by Dr Bloch. Inhabits the Indian Ocean and at the time of writing Shaw noted that “the history and manner (of the fish) are entirely unknown”
