The Autobiography of “Evans of the Broke” [Or Teddy Evans Polar Explorer] – Admiral Lord Mountevans

And boldly on the dust jacket – Second in Command of Scott’s Last Polar Expedition – Commander in Chief of the Royal Australian Navy and Africa Station and perhaps the Greatest British Naval Adventurer – the first tow fact the third and final rather bold for an autobiography.

This edition published in 1952 by Hutchinson, the first 1946. Octavo, 250 pages, nicely illustrated from period photographs including his polar period. Super copy in a very good jacket.

A determined chap as one could imagine – history has spoilt the Scott / Evans relationship throwing up some unsavoury thoughts from the pair that flow both ways. One day the parrot on the perch the next the feather duster!

The reference to Broke may confuse – he was far from being short of a bob – HMS Broke, his command during WWI, sunk five German destroyers. His time as leader of the Australian Squadron is of significance.

A fine copy of this important work. The best we have seen. And, as this is Voyager’s favourite book we have seen a few.

Published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1964. Octavo, 192 pages. We can’t find a mark and the dust jacket is perfect, as if new, except price clipped – a gift givers prerogative.

A very unusually presented biographical work on Robert Louis Stevenson published by Peter Davies, London in 1926. Not a first printing but extremely scarce regardless.

Tall slim octavo, card covers with affixed wrap around picturesque cover with yap edges. Internally twenty five pages of tipped in images from original photographs with narrative opposite. A mixture of the people, mainly family, in his life … his life in Scotland and in Samoa [which probably saved him from ill-health] and his magnificent schooner “Casco”.

Some age to yap cover, internally pretty good, gift inscription on front ends.

Large octavo, 349 pages, plus addenda and after introductions. Published by Harpers in 1992. Nicely illustrated from period photographs etc. A very good near fine copy.

The adventurous Bernhardt not satisfied with being the most admired actor of the 19thC took to some strange activities … riding whales, collecting exotic animals, early ballooning and, was a accomplished artist and sculptor.

Published by Allen Lane , London 1981. Thick octavo, 446 with many illustrations from period photographs, endpaper maps. Private bookplate on front paste down. Showing a little age, still a pretty good copy.

It was the biggest scrap that no one was to know about … Eisenhower versus Montgomery and some others thrown in the mix. Post war cover up exposed by David Irving.

Reminiscences of an Australian Pioneer – Robert Barton [Uncle of Banjo Patterson] – 1917

Barton’s reminiscences – a “squatter of the olden days”. Born in 1842 in the central West belonging to the first generation to follow the original land-takers in the west.

Barton, was an uncle to Banjo Patterson and spent his life in New south Wales and Queensland. His portrait as frontispiece is rather dull but his life was not.

By 1840 the squattocracy was firmly ‘landed’ and well-to-do. Barton looks back positively to the convict origins of his family’s assigned men. As a young man in his twenties the bushrangers Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall bushranging gangs were part of his life. Later he is confronted by the trade union movement and striking shearers.

First edition published by Tyrrells, Sydney in 1917. Octavo, vii, 288 pages with portrait of author. Original purple cloth rather standard binding, spine faded as usual with the plum coloured dye. Pages toned but clean and some age to ends, ownership details on front ends and the odd helpful annotation from an informed early owner – likely first. Scarce and worthwhile copy.
