    The French version – “Carte de la Nle. Galles Meridle. ou de la cote orientale de la Nle. Hollande, decouverte et visitee par le Lieutenant J. Cook, Commandant de L’Endeavour, vassieu de sa Majeste en 1770

    Original copperplate engraving by distinguished cartographer Robert Benard recording Cook’s navigational records, published in Paris circa 1774. Large format 77cm by 36cm, original folds, coloured in outline.

    On his first of three voyages James Cook discovered and charted the East Coast of Australia for the first time and this chart resulted from that work. There are many interesting features including Mt Warning, the Glass House Mountains (named as such because they reminded Cook of the view of the coastal Glass Kilns as seen from the water in the South West of England) and the record of the grounding on the reef of Cape Tribulation before recovering the vessel in the Endeavour River in the Far North.

    Perfect bound large format, card cover, 187 pages illustrated nicely throughout. Scarce and sought after – a very good copy

    The seventy-six convict woman are listed on the front cover and the list of free female passengers are listed on the title.

    The convict women came from all parts of England. At the end of a good Introduction we see a map with the locations and names. The extraordinary history behind many, if not all, is set out incredibly well in the first 120 pages. Then the voyage out then the goings on at Norfolk Island and New South Wales.

    Relic from the Otago – Skuttled in the Derwent, Tasmania – Past Captain being the Distinguished Author Joseph Conrad.

    A solid piece of wood with some remnant attached claimed to be from the vessel “Otago” which was sunk in the Derwent before bits were reclaimed – in particular scrap metal which went to Japan much to the chagrin of the locals.

    18cm by 13cm by 3cm.

    The inscription reads “Otago 367 ton Barque – 1869 Built Glasgow – 1900 Used as a coal hulk, Hobart – 1931 Stranded, Otago Bay Derwent River, Tasmania. – She was the only command of the Author Joseph Conrad”.

    See also our scarce publication by Crowther relating to the Otago hatch in the Hobart Maritime Museum … perhaps the best Museum in Australia! .

    Rather scarce and no wonder given the paper wrappers. The long title worth detailing

    The Convict King being The Romantic Life and Adventures of Jorgen Jorgenson who was for a time Monarch of Iceland, helped to Discover Bass Strait, was at the Founding of Hobart etc etc. and Closed His Extraordinary Career in the Hobart Hospital in 1845.

    Published by J Walch & Sons, Tasmania. No date but 1891. Authority Ferguson 104889.

    Interestingly for a book published by the famous Hobart printing firm – this book was actually printed by Kelly of London and Kingston on Thames, England.

    Octavo, 235 pages, with advertisements for other contemporary Walch publications in the ends and on the back cover. Splitting a bit down the spine edge, now repaired and secured with acid free archival Japan paper.

    Published as part of Walch’s Series of Books on Old Van Diemen’s Land – No 3. A very good copy despite any deficiencies given its rarity and obvious vulnerability.

    The story of Jorgen Jorgenson is a full and strange one – at first hid life appears surely a fiction … but no this man was out for adventure and mixed with many who were making their own mark on the World and its History.

    The Convict King a scarce edition for sure.

    A complete set of 25 vibrantly coloured cigarette cards used to promote John Player’s cigarettes – issued in 1931.

    The first time we have had this set and already our favourite. A maritime delight. Each card has an interesting narrative on the back … a wee bit better and more informative than other sets we believe.

    In protective sleeve as shown .. the odd insignificant mark – a really good set.

    Naval vessels include … Princess Royal, Queen Charlotte, Colossus, Seahorse, Bellerophon (We prefer “Billy Ruffian”), Royal Sovereign, Black Prince, Victory (hurray), Terra Nova, Formidable etc etc.

    We have seen this set mounted for display. One of the few that can still get away with that treatment in the “modern home”!
